What does a SAP ABAP Consultant do?
An SAP ABAP Consultant works with functional consultants, architects, developers, Basis teams and business users to design, build, test and support ABAP-based SAP solutions.
The role is commonly used across SAP S/4HANA, ECC, SAP BTP and upgrade programmes where employers need technical design input, reliable ABAP delivery, clean core awareness and practical issue resolution.
When businesses hire SAP ABAP Consultants
- Designing and building SAP reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms or workflows
- Supporting SAP S/4HANA migration, ECC upgrades or custom code remediation activity

Typical responsibilities

- Support SAP S/4HANA, ECC, ABAP Cloud, RAP, BTP and Fiori-related development where relevant
- Review custom code, performance issues, transport impacts, upgrade risks and support implications
- Work with functional consultants, architects, Basis teams, testers and implementation partners
- Document technical designs, build notes, testing evidence, support guidance and knowledge transfer material
Key skills to look for
- SAP ABAP consulting experience
- Strong understanding of SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC and ABAP development standards
- Knowledge of reports, interfaces, enhancements, forms, workflows, BAPIs, BADIs or user exits
- Awareness of ABAP Cloud, RAP, clean core and upgrade-safe development approaches
- Ability to work with functional consultants, architects, Basis teams, testers and business users
- Clear judgement on technical design, code quality, performance, maintainability and supportability
