SAP S/4HANA Architect

SAP S/4HANA Architects help employers design and govern the move to SAP S/4HANA with clear decisions across process, data, integration, extensions and delivery. They reduce transformation risk by keeping architecture aligned to business outcomes and long-term supportability.

What does a SAP S/4HANA Architect do?

An SAP S/4HANA Architect shapes the architecture for SAP S/4HANA transformation, migration or implementation programmes, making sure business process, data, integration, application and platform decisions work together.

The role is commonly used where employers are moving from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA, adopting RISE with SAP, applying clean core principles or redesigning the SAP landscape for long-term business and technology needs.

When businesses hire SAP S/4HANA Architects

  • Planning an SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA migration or greenfield implementation
  • Designing an S/4HANA architecture that supports clean core and future extensibility
  • Aligning process, data, integration, security and reporting decisions across the programme
  • Controlling architecture decisions during fit-gap, design, build, test and deployment
  • Reducing transformation risk by giving delivery teams clear design principles and governance

Typical responsibilities

  • Define SAP S/4HANA architecture principles, roadmap, design standards and governance controls
  • Shape future-state process, application, data, integration, security and extension architecture
  • Work with enterprise architects, solution architects, functional leads, technical teams and implementation partners
  • Review fit-gap outputs, clean core decisions, customisation requests, integration patterns and migration risks
  • Support SAP Activate phases from strategy and preparation through design, deployment and run
  • Challenge design decisions that create unnecessary complexity, cost or long-term support issues
  • Provide S/4HANA architecture assurance through build, testing, cutover, go-live and BAU transition

Key skills to look for

  • SAP S/4HANA architecture experience
  • Strong understanding of SAP ECC to S/4HANA migration and transformation approaches
  • Knowledge of SAP Activate, RISE with SAP, SAP BTP and clean core principles
  • Experience across process, data, integration, application and platform architecture
  • Ability to work across business, architecture, functional, technical and supplier teams
  • Clear judgement on standardisation, extensibility, migration risk and long-term supportability
